ARO Kickboxing Couch to Comp Charity Event 24th September

On Saturday, I interviewed Lee Scott Smith, owner of ARO fitness kickboxing in the Selsey Centre.
For some of you that don't know, ARO fitness kickboxing has been going for 10 years, and for the last 4 years have been in Selsey.
I asked Lee what the benefits of kickboxing were, and he told me it helped people get fitter, more confident in themselves and having the ability to use it as self defense if needed.
Lee has set up a charity event called Couch to Comp, I asked him what this involved and the details.
He said," Selsey has been good to us since moving here 4 years ago and I wanted to give something back.
In the first 4 weeks we started with 22 people and assessed them, then chose out 8 who we really thought would benefit from kickboxing.  So each person has picked a charity, and all proceeds made on the night will be shared between them"
Why not show your support, and come down to the Selsey Center on the 24th of September at 4.30pm and watch these people do their best in the ring.

On Wednesday, I spoke to Sue Lintott, who has been on the RNLI fundraising committee for 21 years, and chairman for two years, and she gave me some information about lifeboat week, and events going on.   Sue said, "There is an open day, where people can go round the new boathouse, which is on Monday 31st July, 6pm-9pm.On Tuesday, there is a walking treasure hunt, with a quiz at the Seal pub on Wednesday the 2nd. Following onto Thursday, there is the race night on at the Royal British Legion. On Friday, there is the dog show, ARO fitness kickboxing display, and the tug-of-war. Flag day and the car treasure hunt is on the Saturday, and finally it is Lifeboat  launch day on Sunday 6th of August." Then she told me a little bit more about lifeboat day itself. "On actual lifeboat day, it's the same as usual, including the bouncy castle, the games, and stalls, but there is no fireworks or air-display this year, as the insurance for them is too expensive." Sue a...

Neil Kimber Interview

On Friday, I interviewed Neil  Kimber, owner of Highhouse Insurance, an independent insurance company that's been in Selsey for 10 years.  I wanted to interview Neil as he his well known for his local charity work and I wanted to find out more about him and his work.  Neil explained how he raises the money he donates to charities, " Every time someone buys insurance from us, a percentage of that money goes into a pot,and as that pot fills up, we donate it back to the community by way of local charities,"  Next I asked him what charities he supports and he said" The charities I support have to be local, like Scouts, Selsey carers, First Responders, Fireworks and other local charities, I also support community events, like Screen On The Green"  He also supports charities by giving them help, advice, and loaning them equipment like speakers and microphones.  He also told me that in the last 10 years, the company has raised £80,000!  As part of hi...

Selsey's contribution to D-Day

This week marks the 75th anniversary of D-day! The invasion of Normandy , or better known as D-day.   The day troops from Britain, America, Canada and France faced   German forces on the coast of Normandy, forming an Allied force of 150,000 soldiers.      Selsey was home to RAF Selsey, in Church Norton, one of the many operational airfields in West Sussex.   Many troops camped and stayed there, awaiting their missions.    Selsey played   a large part in the invasion of Normandy. It helped store the Mulberry Harbours underneath the sea in shallow areas so German planes couldn't see them as they flew overhead. Mulberry Harbours were floating, artificial harbours   designed and constructed by British Military engineers in WW2.   They were then sailed over from the South of England to the North-West of Normandy. Mulberry Harbours were first suggested by Winston Churchill in 1917, then after a failed raid in Germany, 19...
