Selsey's contribution to D-Day

This week marks the 75th anniversary of D-day! The invasion of Normandy , or better known as D-day. The day troops from Britain, America, Canada and France faced German forces on the coast of Normandy, forming an Allied force of 150,000 soldiers. Selsey was home to RAF Selsey, in Church Norton, one of the many operational airfields in West Sussex. Many troops camped and stayed there, awaiting their missions. Selsey played a large part in the invasion of Normandy. It helped store the Mulberry Harbours underneath the sea in shallow areas so German planes couldn't see them as they flew overhead. Mulberry Harbours were floating, artificial harbours designed and constructed by British Military engineers in WW2. They were then sailed over from the South of England to the North-West of Normandy. Neil Kimber Interview

On Friday, I interviewed Neil Kimber, owner of Highhouse Insurance, an independent insurance company that's been in Selsey for 10 years. I wanted to interview Neil as he his well known for his local charity work and I wanted to find out more about him and his work. Neil explained how he raises the money he donates to charities, " Every time someone buys insurance from us, a percentage of that money goes into a pot,and as that pot fills up, we donate it back to the community by way of local charities," Next I asked him what charities he supports and he said" The charities I support have to be local, like Scouts, Selsey carers, First Responders, Fireworks and other local charities, I also support community events, like Screen On The Green" He also supports charities by giving them help, advice, and loaning them equipment like speakers and microphones. Couch to Comp Charity event raises £1882 On Sunday the 24th of September, Lee invited me to the Couch to Comp at the Selsey centre. I thought it was amazing! And even though it was a competition, all of them got along together like a family. First their were the children's rounds, followed by the Couch to Comp. As the compere announced the next rounds, the competitors came out to their own choice of music and headed for their corner. Before the fights, I spoke to some of the competitors and asked them a couple of questions. Some of them were raising money for the Snowdrop trust, some Cancer research, and others Chichester diabetes and the NNU. Next I asked them what made them want to do kickboxing. Jamie encouraged two of the fighters to do it, some others did it for fitness and the rest did it for their kids and to take part.
